Choosing or Changing a Provider
Choosing a competent service provider for services can be a confusing and cumbersome process. If you are looking for a provider for the first time – or are not happy with your current provider – and are currently receiving funding from a county board, RSC, or other sources for the purpose of receiving services, chances are good that you will be able to use those same funds with another provider of your choice. You can choose to change providers. It is your right.
There are questions that can be asked to help maximize your success of finding a compatible provider. A good provider will be more than happy to answer the questions listed below. Please take time with your provider and not only ask questions, but ask to see some of the homes they currently operate. Ask about vocational services and other services you can acquire at the same location. Building a relationship with a provider of multiple services can be an advantage by not having to deal with multiple agencies, departments or personnel.
General Questions to Ask an Adult Service Provider
- What is the history of your agency?
- Is your agency CARF (The Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission) certified for services?
- What has been the average annual percentage increase in your costs/charges for services for the last five years?
- How many clients do you serve in each service department?
- Does the agency have clients and family members we can talk to about your services?
- What disabilities does the agency serve?
- What system of checks and balances does the agency employ to ensure client health and safety?
- How flexible is the agency in partnering with parents/guardians to ensure individuals receive the services they need?
- What process does the agency use for conflict resolution, and what timeframe is used?
- How much notice will the agency give to the individual and family if the agency no longer wishes to provide services?
We hope this list provides you with a good place to start in finding an adult service provider who you can partner with and experience success.
